What brings you to yoga?
Recently I was thinking about what brings people to yoga class? Why do we make time for this practice each week or several times a week?
For some, it might be the only time during their day or week to sit down and do nothing. It might be a chance to take a break from all the busyness and stress of day-to-day life. Some might find it helps them to sleep better. Others, it helps their body move a little more freely. Maybe it’s some combination of all of the above. Or maybe it’s a different reason entirely.
Then I started thinking about why I teach yoga. Or really what is the most important part of the practice I want to share with others.
Of course, there are lots of reasons why I teach yoga. To me, the most important is connection. For more people to have the time, space, and silence to really connect to themselves. To understand and know themselves deeper. To be better able to connect to their body and honor how it’s feeling and what it needs. To connect to their breath as a way to stay in the present moment. To connect with what’s right here, right now.
There are so many distractions each moment of the day and our attention can be pulled in many different directions. We might often think about the past or be worried about the future. So much so that we completely miss what is happening right now. I completely understand and experience this too.
So to me, a yoga class can be that hand on the heart moment to stop, reflect, and remember what’s really important to you. It’s a chance to pause and experience life as it is unfolding now.
