On motivation.
Do you ever think to yourself “I wish I was more motivated to _______.” Fill in the blank. We often think we lack motivation to accomplish the task, attend the workout class, complete the chore. The truth is we might not often be very motivated to do the things that help us to feel our best, and that’s okay. If I waited until I felt motivated to wake up at 5:30 AM to be at the gym for a 6 AM class, I would probably never make it there!
Instead you might think of one little step you can take towards what you want to do. I often say showing up to class is the hardest part because it is!
It is so much easier not to show up, especially at the end of a long day. But it is the action, the forward momentum that breeds the motivation to keep you going.
If you are waiting for the motivation to walk 5 km, it might not ever come. Instead, try going for just 10 minutes and see how you feel once you start. Odds are you start feeling pretty good and might have more energy to keep going. And if not, at least you got out and did something!
I was speaking with some women after class about something similar. That before class they didn’t really feel like coming, they were tired from the day they just had, which is totally understandable! But they showed up anyway and were amazed at how much better they felt after class! Their bodies didn’t feel as stiff and sore and they felt more relaxed too!
That is the power of action, of movement, of showing up and doing the thing even when you really don’t feel like it! It is such a powerful connection to make for yourself too. The difference in how you feel before and after class. Let me tell you I NEVER want to wake up at 6 AM and teach Zoom classes, but I ALWAYS feel better after I do. It’s that feeling that keeps me going.
You won’t always feel motivated and that’s okay! Often just taking one step forward will be the momentum you need to keep going. You just have to start!
